Sometimes I see something in a store that would be perfect for a friend or think of a funny memory that makes me want to reach out to a family member. But then I don't, and the moment slips away.
In this world of endless communication possibilities, why do I struggle with sending that quick text or mailing a letter to just let someone know I'm thinking of them?
Well, a few weeks ago, one of my lovely cousins called me out of the blue just to say hi and catch up a little. I hadn't talked to her in so long, and let me tell you, it was so good to just hear her voice. It really did brighten my day and made me wonder why I didn't do things like that, too.
What a wonderful thing to tell someone you're thinking of them.
So as I was strolling through Target the other week (as I normally do most lunch breaks), just seeing what fun new things they had out, this adorably quirky bracelet of two frogs kissing caught my eye.
It made me immediately think of my sister, who lives in another state. Then it made me smile, and I knew it would make her smile, too.
So I mailed it to her. It wasn't her birthday or Christmas.
It was just because...
every day needs a little whimsy.
And it's so true. We all get bogged down in our workaday woes and fast paced life, so we need to make sure we incorporate a touch of whimsy, a bit of wonderment into the day to remind us of the magic of our surroundings and that others love us and are always thinking of us.
I want to be better at taking advantage of these little opportunities to make someone I love smile. Sometimes I feel I have to have something to talk about or that I'll be intruding in their day, but how can sending a quick hello or delivering a smile make their day anything but brighter?
So that's my goal. To be aware and vigilant of ways to share a bit of whimsy with those near and dear to me.
What about you? How do like to keep in touch with friends and family?
How sweet and what an adorable bracelet!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ginny! I may have started a collection of these bracelets. I have giraffes kissing, fish kissing, and tigers kissing. They are all hilarious, but the frog one just reminded me of my sister:) Hope you're having a great day!
DeleteI love this idea so much! I don't know how many times I want to send a "just because" gift to someone and don't have anything on hand and then it ends up getting pushed to the side and I never get to it! Your post has inspired me to make "just because" gifts/cards more of a priority!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Carly! Sometimes it's hard for me to remember to take the time to send these types of things, but it always makes me feel good. I hope you're having a great week!!
DeleteYou win the most thoughtful human being award! I'm working on texting and calling more and I know my Grandma's appreciate it. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet, Jess! I'm sure they appreciate hearing from you! I hope you're having a great day, friend!
DeleteThat is so sweet! I love sending hand written letters to friends or family just because. A friend did it to me awhile back and it made me so happy, I had to continue it on! :)

That is so awesome you do that! I need to start doing it more, too. There's nothing quite like getting a letter in the mail (that isn't a bill:) Hope you're having a great day!
DeleteJust because gifts are the best!
ReplyDeleteThey sure are!! Hope you're having a great day, Kate!
DeleteI totally need a reminder to share whimsy with the people I love. It might be because I'm a Hallmarker, but I LOVE sending cards. One of my favorite things to do is to stock up on goofy cards and stickers (no one's too old for some puffy sticker goodness). Nothing like a little snail mail to brighten a friend's day :)

You're so right! Snail mail is the best (as long as it's not a bill:) I love that you send puffy stickers to people--those are SO FUN! I hope you're having a great day!!
DeleteWhat a fantastically thoughtful post, friend! You are such a sweet sister to send a little sunshine to your sister just because. Such a fabulous reminder to reach out in creative ways to let people be reminded that they are known and well loved. Thanks for this - I needed it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Meg:) You're the sweetest! I hope you're having a great day, friend!
DeleteWe call them "I love you" gifts in my family. That was so thoughtful! See you in a few days!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great tradition to have! Can't wait:)
DeleteWhat a lovely post Kari. I often think that if I make contact it will be an intrusion, but of course you're right, it would no doubt be a pleasure. I'm sure your sister was thrilled to receive that sweet gift from you and to know that you were thinking of her. Such a sweet gesture. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteJust because gifts might be the best kind. It's not forced and it's all about the thought. I'm sure you made your sister feel very loved.
ReplyDeleteEvery day needs a little whimsy..I love that!
ReplyDeleteYou are so thoughtful! Little just-because gifts are the best. :)
