MY HIDDEN TALENT: HULA HOOPING

In my last post, I mentioned that I discovered I had a hidden talent while on a weekend getaway.  While dancing up a storm at the small local bar, a guy dressed as a cowboy went into the back room and came out with.....hula hoops!

Now I had tried hula hooping in the past.  My mom is a pro at it, but I could never get the hoop to stay spinning.  I thought I'd give it a whirl, though (delightful pun intended:).

And shockingly, the hoop kept spinning and spinning.  It was actually comical how easy it was, and then I started walking around with it.  It was a great night full of hooping and high fives.

The next day, I noticed my abs were super sore.  Light bulb!  Hula hooping isn't just some out of date kid toy, it could be my ticket to rock hard abs!

I did some more research and found that I have been out of the loop (I swear I didn't try for that one:) on this whole hula hooping craze.  There are hula hooping boot camps, celebrities do it, and way more sophisticated hula hoops than I knew existed are available for sale.

I figured out that the reason this particular hoop worked so well for me was because it is huge.  Apparently those ones sold in toy stores for kiddos are made for their tiny bodies, but aren't necessarily easy for us adults to use.  So if you're thinking of trying hula hooping out, make sure to get a hoop at least 40" in diameter.

You may be wondering where I got this beauty in the pictures.  This is actually the magical one from the bar that night that my friend sneaked out bought for me.  I'm not sure if I could even hula hoop with another one.  I think it needs some fresh tape in prettier colors, though.

Maybe I also need to add lights to it.  How cool are these pictures my friend took this weekend?  Very psychedelic.

So that's my fun hidden talent I just found out about.  I'm sure you have some talent that is just lurking and waiting for you to discover it.  Maybe it's baton twirling or you're really good at the 90s kid favorite Skip It.  I really want to try hula hooping consistently for a few weeks to see if it does work as a fitness option.  I'll let you know how it goes:)

    1. Oh, maybe I should start a hula hoop club:) I remember seeing a lady hula hooping with lighted hoops at a concert a few years ago. The band brought her on stage, and she was really good. Maybe someday:) Hope you're having a great night!

  4. We have a dollar store hula hoop that I play around with here, and it's definitely a good ab workout! I think I could keep it going longer if I had a bigger one or a weighted one, but it's fun anyways!

    1. It is fun! I feel like a kid and kind of silly, so I do it in the garage...but it's a great alternative to doing crunches:) Hope you're having a great night, Rachel!

  7. I love hula hooping too and always thought about buying one but I only find child sized ones or crazy weighted ones like the one my mother bought on a whim. It seriously weighs like 7 pounds and when it slaps your waist it bruises! Where did you get yours?! xo Dianna

    1. That sounds painful! I got this one from the bar we were at. They had all sorts of hats and hula hoops, so they sold it to us for $5. I've seen some ones online, but they're so expensive! I've thought about trying to make my own, too. Here's a link to a website I found. I haven't bought anything from them, but the hoops look cool. Let me know if you find a hoop that works for you! Hope you're having a great night!

    1. I almost think it's just a fluke, because I tried it before and never had any luck. Maybe I just had to find the right hoop:) Hope you're having a great start to your week! Thank you!

  11. Oh my gosh, SKIP IT! I used to love that thing. I've also seen people using weighted hula hoops that are designed specifically for exercise--not quite as pretty but I bet those would be killer for the abs!

    1. Yay! You remember Skip It! That was the coolest thing, but I was terrible at it:) Good old 90s toys:) Hope you're having a great start to your week!

  12. You should try out all the 90s toys and see which one offers the best workout. If they all work your home gym could be comprised only of 90s toys. This totally makes me want to hula hoop. I have a weighted one from sports authority, but I barely ever use it. You've inspired me :)
